Measurements of lengths, diameters, heights, and thickness can all be made linearly, both inside and externally. Scale is just one example of the series of precisely spaced lines that are marked on line measuring equipment. The scale's graduations and the dimensions to be measured are in line. Instruments for linear measurements might be either end or line measurements. In end measuring devices, such as micrometres and slip gauges, the measurement is made between two end surfaces.
