Hardness Tester

The instrument that determines a material's hardness by measuring the effect of a localised penetration by a standardised rounded or pointed indenter made of diamond, carbide, or hard steel on its surface. Brinell, Vickers, and Rockwell C hardness tests were used to determine hardness. The Rockwell hardness tester measures hardness by measuring the depth of penetration of the indenter under a defined load with either a steel ball or a conical diamond known as a brale. Brinell hardness is measured by indenting a hardened steel or carbide ball of known diameter into a surface under a known load and measuring the diameter of the indentation with a microscope.A square-based diamond pyramid indenter is used in the Vickers hardness tester, and the hardness number is equal to the load divided by the product of the diagonal lengths of the square impression.
